The mid-year leadership meeting of the International Bar Association (IBA) was held today, Saturday, May 24, 2025, in the city of Milan, Italy.
Representatives from member countries around the world gathered to discuss challenges, opportunities, and strategies for advancing global justice and improving the professional status of defenders. The active participation of the leadership of the Afghanistan Independent bar Association in Exile in this meeting provided a valuable opportunity to highlight the critical human rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly the alarming conditions faced by defenders, women, judges, and legal activists, on a global platform. During the sidelines of this meeting, effective discussions took place with the heads of the German Bar Association regarding the issues faced by Afghan refugee lawyers in neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan and Iran. Separate sessions were also held with the leadership of the IBA, the European Bar Commission CCBE , and bar president and representative of countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, India, Norway, Mexico, and others. In these discussions, the necessity of targeted support for Afghanistan’s legal community, enhancing global advocacy, and identifying practical solutions to support at-risk lawyers were emphasized. We reaffirm our commitment to continuing our advocacy, strengthening international cooperation, and keeping the voice of the Afghan people heard on the global stage.
